The Wisconsin Badgers Defense shined and the Running game shined in a 41 – 21 victory Saturday night in Las Vegas.  Chris Borland seemed to be in on every defensive play until hurting his shoulder late in the 2nd half.  The young D-Line dominated as did the back end of the Defense, all in all it was a dominating game by the Badgers “D”, they did give up over 100 yards rushing in the game (last year they held 10 teams under 100 yards rushing) but most of those yards came late when most of the starters were getting some rest.  At halftime the UNLV offense only managed 11 total yards, but did have 14 points on the board as two costly turnovers made the halftime score much closer than it really was.

The offense minus those two costly turnovers were very effective, mostly on the ground as the Badgers ran the ball very well behind the 3 headed attack of John Clay, Monte Ball, and the Freshman James White.  John Clay had just 17 carries as the Badgers want to take it easy on him early in the season so he’s 100% for the Big Ten season.  Clay did take full advantage of the 17 touches he had as he went over 100 yards for the 13th time of his career and 7th straight game dating back to last season.  Clay finished with 123 yards and 2 TD’s, Ball finished the game with 16 carries for 79 yards, and the Freshman had a fine first career game with 11 carries for 59 yards.  The Badgers finished the game with 278 yards rushing with an average of over 5 yards per carry.  Scott Tolzien was solid minus the 1 INT, he finished the game 15 – 20 for 197 yards and 1 INT.  Wisconsin all in all had a solid 2010 opener, the score ended up 41 – 21, but could have easily been more like 48 – 7 if the Badgers clean up a few key mistakes on the offensive side.   No matter what the score it’s still a victory and the Badgers start the season 1 – 0, and here are some of the game notes from Saturday’s game.
