White named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

White rushed for 145 yards and four TDs against Austin Peay

MADISON, Wis. — Freshman James White has been named the Big Ten Conference’s Freshman of the Week after enjoying a breakout performance in No. 11 Wisconsin’s 70-3 win over Austin Peay on Saturday.

White rushed for a career-high 145 yards on 11 carries and joined Ron Dayne as the only other freshman running back in school history to score four rushing touchdowns. In addition, White’s 13.2 yards per carry is the fourth-highest total in UW history (min. 10 attempts). White added 12 receiving yards on one catch and 43 return yards on two kickoffs to equal 200 all-purpose yards on the day.

He scored his first career touchdown in the first quarter on an 18 yard run, and then added his second in the following quarter with a career-long 66 yard run on a sweep around the left side. It was Wisconsin’s longest play from scrimmage since a 72-yard run by John Clay against Fresno State on Sept. 12, 2009. In the third quarter, White added touchdown runs of 11 and 19 yards to end his day.

White’s award is the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor in UW history as the award is new for the 2010 season.
