Clay Named Semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award


MADISON, Wis . – Wisconsin junior running back John Clay has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, it was announced Thursday . The 2009 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Clay is second in the Big Ten and 13th in the country with an average of 103 . 2 rushing yards per game . He also leads the conference with 13 rushing touchdowns. Sitting at 929 rushing yards on the season, Clay needs just 71 more yards to become the sixth running back in school history to have back- to-back 1, 000 -yard seasons. Clay has been a consistent performer over his career for the Badgers. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in 12 of his last 14 games and scored at least one touchdown in 13 of the last 15 contests. Tough competition has also brought out the best in Clay in 2010. On Oct . 16, he became the first running back in 29 games to rush for 100 yards against Ohio State as he gained 104 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Badgers knocked off the top – ranked Buckeyes. The following week , Clay scored two more touchdowns and rushed for 91 yards as Wisconsin won at No . 13 Iowa , 31- 30. Ron Dayne is the only Badger to win the award, doing so in 1999 . He also was a finalist in 1998 . Anthony Davis (2001 ), Brian Calhoun (2005 ) and P .J . Hill (2006 ) are the only other players in Wisconsin history to be named semifinalists for the award. The 175 members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes to determine the 2010 finalists. On Monday, Nov . 22, three finalists will be named live on ESPNU, and a second vote by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will determine the recipient. The 2010 Doak Walker Award recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday , Dec . 9 on ESPN .
