Wisconsin Badgers Creep Up BCS Rankings

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The magic number the Wisconsin Badgers (8-2, 5-1) must reach to even have a shot at a BCS bowl is the 14 spot. Judging by the latest BCS rankings, Bucky is going to have a lot of work to do in the final two weeks of the regular season.

On Sunday night the current BCS standings were released and the Wisconsin Badgers did improve from last week’s rank of 22 as they moved up to the 19 slot.

With two games left in the season, the Badgers will have to be awfully impressive and will need some help if they want to make a late-season climb into the top 14. One thing that will benefit Wisconsin will be if they can go on the road and beat a good Minnesota Golden Gophers team Saturday, who by the way made their way to the 25 slot in the BCS rankings even after having a bye week.

One has to wonder just where the Badgers would be if they would have come away with a win at Arizona State and not have fallen victim to the horrible Pac-12 officiating. I’m not one to usually look back and say “well, what if this happened” or “things would be different if this had happened,” but in this situation it’s hard not to.

If the Badgers would have won that game against the Sun Devils they would be 9-1 and sitting inside the top 14 of the BCS standings. They would certainly be ahead of Fresno State and Northern Illinois, who sit 15 and 16 respectively.

Like my Dad used to say however, “If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we’d all have a Merry Christmas.” The reality of it is that all the Badgers can do is take care of business, look for some help and see where they land at the end of the season when the BCS rankings mean the most.

The reality of the situation is that the loss to ASU due to officiating will keep tOSU out of the Bowl Championship final and UW out of a BCS bowl. You would be hard pressed to find a bad early season referee call that caused more ripples in the college football world. If it were up to me those officials would never take the field again. This was the most egregious lack of judgement I’ve ever seen and made me wonder if the officials had bet on ASU.

With Baylor moving in on OSU for that 3 spot, that debacle at Arizona State certainly will hurt their chances as well yes. There was definitely something fishy going on there. Like I said I’m not a fan of looking back and saying “What if?” but I have a feeling this will cause the Badgers a berth in a BCS bowl.

I agree — Brutus is just as upset as Bucky about that call… wonder how many OSU fans laughed at how the Badgers lost that game only to find out now the repercussions, or ripples as you called them. Quite an interesting and unfortunate scenario.

I’m not sure what the actual rules are, but I was almost certain in non-conference games that they are supposed to use neutral conference referees? Maybe I’m wrong but I thought that was the case.
