Ever since the Wisconsin Badgers lost two games in three weeks in the month of September, it seems as if they have received little to no respect around the country. Which is puzzling especially since the Badgers have won six-straight games and in impressive fashion, with their latest victory coming at the hands of the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday afternoon.
Gophers head coach Jerry Kill also believes the Badgers are getting no love. After the Badgers defeated the Gophers 20-7 Kill said, “That’s the most underrated football team in the country.” It’s these types of quotes that are the reason why many in college football like Kill and why he is so well-respected in the coaching community.
But he is dead on with that statement. We all know what went down against Arizona State with the Badgers losing 32-30. Not saying that Kyle French would have automatically made that last second field goal to win the game, but to never have had a chance was a travesty. Two weeks later they went into Columbus, Ohio and although they lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes 31-24, they gave one of the better team’s in the country a run for their money. Do the math folks, that’s two losses to two very good teams by only a combined 9 points.
Since that loss however the Badgers have been on fire, mainly due to their excellent running game and very stout defense. Running backs Melvin Gordon and James White have rushed for a combined 2,656 yards and 25 touchdowns and the offense has put up an average of 36.8 points per game, 24th best in the nation. Bucky’s defense has only allowed 13.4 points per game, 5th in the nation, and has not given up an offensive touchdown to a Big Ten opponent in three straight games and six games overall this season.
I think it’s time the rest of the country wakes up and realizes just how good this Badgers team is. With a chance to possibly play in a BCS bowl game once again this season, it would be nice to see Wisconsin’s talents on display on the national stage.
