The Wisconsin Badgers needed a good showing on the road against the Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday and they did winning 20-7 at TCF Bank Stadium. With the latest BCS rankings still to come out later Sunday night, let’s take a look at where the Badgers just might end up.
For starters, we had a few upsets around the college world Saturday. The Oregon Ducks lost for the second time in three weeks and the Baylor Bears are no longer unbeaten, so those two teams shuffle down the rankings meaning Wisconsin will move up a bit. LSU handed Texas A&M their third loss which helps out the Badgers as well.
As we all know the Badgers must get up into the top 14 to be eligible for an at-large BCS bid. With UCLA’s loss to Arizona State, that should benefit the Badgers position in the rankings as well.
So what exactly does this all mean for Bucky? Well for starters, they move up from their previous spot of 19. The million dollar question is, just how far do they move up? Getting a victory on the road against the Gophers who were ranked 25th at the time will help as it was the last chance Wisconsin had at getting a “quality” win. With numerous teams ahead of them losing as well (and in Oregon’s case getting beat really bad) that should also help improve their rank as well.
Wisconsin remember has lost two games by only a combined 9 points. Those two teams they lost to have done exceptional thus far. Ohio State is still undefeated and could possibly play in the BCS National Championship game. Arizona State also has two losses, but is looking like they will be playing in the Pac-12 championship game for a spot in the Rose Bowl.
A lot to digest right now yes, but that’s the beauty of the BCS. Any given week can turn out like this with upsets and teams shuffling up and down the rankings.
In Wisconsin’s case I believe they move right into that 15 spot. I’m not worried that they will still be out of the top 14 because they should have no problem handling Penn State Saturday and they should be able to move off the bubble and where they need to be. The Badgers are one of the hottest college teams right now, having won six straight, and deserve to be at least in consideration for a BCS at-large bowl berth.
