Losing is never fun. It sucks. Whether it’s in checkers, chess, video games or tic-tac-toe, anytime you lose it’s always a downer. When you’re 16-0 like the Wisconsin Badgers were heading into Tuesday’s Big Ten showdown with the Indiana Hoosiers, losing can sting a bit and take some time to get over.
Bo Ryan’s team better be over it by now as they head into another conference clash with the Michigan Wolverines Saturday at the Kohl Center.
In the Big Ten, a conference I and many others call the best in the nation, you’re going to lose a game or two on the road. It’s almost inevitable. The important part is how you bounce back from that loss the next time you hit the floor that shows everyone just what kind of team you have.
Now I’m not going to bore you with all the details from Tuesday night’s loss, I’m pretty sure you know exactly what happened by now. But for the Badgers to have a 10 point lead with just over 13 minutes left in the game and not be able to step on the gas and close it out is disheartening.
For the past week and a half leading up to that game, all you heard was how good this Badgers team is. A number three ranking and all of a sudden you’re thrust in the spotlight and everyone is talking about you. Jay Williams of ESPN picks Wisconsin to win it all. The spotlight got very bright and the Badgers ended up getting knocked down a peg or two by a scrappy Indiana team that simply outplayed and outmanned the Badgers.
Against Michigan on Saturday the Badgers need to come out angry, ticked off and ready to prove to the country that they are who we say they are (hello Dennis Green). They need to come out more physical and a big chip on their shoulder ready to prove to the country that they can bounce back in adversity.
If they don’t they could wind up like Ohio State right now, dropping an overtime thriller to Michigan State before losing to Iowa and Minnesota. Right now they are trying not to let this season tailspin out of control. They will get this under control no doubt. But Wisconsin has to avoid even coming close to a downward spiral if they want to win this conference outright and help their seeding come tournament time.
To see what this Wisconsin Badgers team is made of, tune into ESPN at 5:00 pm CT. No doubt the Grateful Red will have the Kohl Center rocking Saturday night.
