I think I speak for all Badgers fans when I say that 2014 is poised to belong to Melvin Gordon III. We all want to see him be in Heisman contention, which he deserves to be. He received a little buzz last season, making many top-10 lists as the season roared on. His playing time, and subsequent production, tapered off as the last month of the season unfolded. But that shouldn’t be the case this year. Running back James White has competed in the 2014 Combine in Indianapolis and will be drafted into the NFL. It’s Gordon’s time as a true starter and a legitimate campaign for the ultimate individual award in all of sports should be started soon.
Every serious Heisman Campaign has to have a slogan to accompany it, so it can gain traction before the year even begins. We all remember the “This Fall Belongs To Ball” slogan for Montee Ball’s Heisman Campaign in 2012. That slogan was branded well before the season began — he even got his picture on the side of the team bus. Thus, we at Badger of Honor figured we might as well start brainstorming for Gordon’s Heisman Campaign for the 2014 season.
Gordon should begin the year in the conversation as an easy top-5 candidate for the ultimate individual prize. A big game (and win) over LSU in the season opener could catapult him to the top of the list. But, we want the analysts, fans and media to have a slogan ready to employ after every big game that he puts up.
This list of possible slogans is very premature and we will look at this topic again over the summer but it’s as good a time as any to start the buzz in Madison.
Without further ado, our team came up with some slogans. Some serious, some silly. Vote for the slogan that you like the best. But, keep in mind that we really want to hear what ideas our readers come up with. Use the comments section as a “write-in vote” area. We are confident that there could be some better slogans out there and are anxious to hear them! Like we said, we’ll look at this again in the summer and will include the best answers from the comments (with credit given).
MGIII finished last season with 1609 Yards, 12 TDs, 7.8 AVG, Eight 100-Yard Games (6 in the first 7 games). If he can continue on his 7.8 AVG per carry, and also go the entire year as the definitive starter, he should blow past the 2,000 yard mark and be well above the 20 TD mark. Combining those stats with the high profile games the Badgers have on the slate for next season would certainly make him a Heisman Trophy favorite. I do think that the Badgers have to win 10 or 11 games in the process for him to be seriously considered; but I think they can and will.
Check out this mashup of some of his best runs of the 2013. It’s fun I promise.
In the summer we will revisit this article and come out with a new one, with a few new slogans. But we figure it’s never too early to get excited for Wisconsin football. We are “Running Back U” after all. Who else is ready for summer?…And that one sport that that starts at the end of it.
