The 2014 NCAA Tournament field has been announced (finally!) with no surprises of the four teams being set as No. 1 seeds. Those four teams are the Florida Gators, Wichita State Shockers, Virginia Cavaliers and Arizona Wildcats.
Interesting enough, the Wisconsin Badgers have defeated two of those four top seeded teams.
Nevermind that the Badgers defeated both the Gators and Cavaliers early in the season. The fact of the matter is Wisconsin played some of the best non-conference competition out there and came away undefeated against teams outside of the Big Ten.
Second game of the season, the Badgers and Gators squared off at the Kohl Center. The Gators at the time were undermanned and ended up losing to Wisconsin 59-53. About a month later Wisconsin traveled to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. A big early season road test, the Badgers came away with a 48-38 victory over the eventual regular season and ACC tournament champions.
And did I mention that the Gators are the overall number one seed in the entire 2014 NCAA Tournament?
Both of those victories are part of the reason why Wisconsin’s RPI (7) and strength of schedule (2) were one of the best in all of college basketball this year. And because of that, Wisconsin was a lock for the No. 2 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
Whether the Badgers can get hot once again and make a deep run remains to be seen. With one of the toughest schedules in the nation however, they are ready for any challenge that may be thrown their way on the road to the Final Four.
