I’ve been asked and have had discussions with people this past week about what a Final Four trip means for Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers basketball program and recruiting.
In my honest opinion, I don’t think much changes.
Bo Ryan looks for the type of kid that will fit into and buy into his system. If you can play solid defense, not turn the ball over and give everything you have for forty minutes, then you’re the type of player coach Ryan is looking for.
It doesn’t matter if you have five-stars next to your name or zero stars. If you do what is asked of you and show Bo you’re willing to put in the hard work, you’ll have a shot with the Badgers.
There’s no doubt that more attention and a brighter light is being shined on the program at this time. Will more top-notch recruits maybe consider joining the Buzzcuts and give Ryan and his staff a shot? More than likely yes. But if you’re not the type of play coach Ryan is looking for, he’s not going to waste his time.
Historically speaking, the Badgers have gotten the “leftovers” when it came to recruiting. A lot of overlooked player’s that the big time colleges thought would not work in their system landed in Madison, WI. For the most part, Ryan has done a fine job coaching those kids.
Does Ryan want to be forever known as the coach to finish no-worse than fourth in the Big Ten and make just one Final Four appearance? Probably not, but we here in Wisconsin know he means more to this program than any outsider could ever imagine. Whether big-time recruits that fit into Ryan’s scheme start landing in the Badger state or not, he’s going to keep plugging away as he always has.
More star players might start paying close attention to the Wisconsin Badgers program. At the end of the day however, it comes down to whether that player fits and buys into what Bo Ryan is doing.
Bo knows basketball. It’s time people outside of Wisconsin truly start seeing that.
