Yes it’s only June and yes the bowl season is still another six-plus months away. But that won’t stop us from taking a look at an early bowl projection or even an AP preseason ranking projection. The Sporting News just came out with their bowl projections while Phil Steele has released his AP preseason ranking for the Wisconsin Badgers in the upcoming 204 season.
In the AP preseason top 25, Steele has the Badgers coming in at the 17th spot. Not bad considering Wisconsin finished in the final AP rankings 22nd in the nation. The Badgers start the season with a tough contest against the LSU Tigers in Houston. Wisconsin’s Big Ten schedule is easier than most and could find themselves in the conference championship game in December.
Which brings me to the next point. The Sporting News has the Badgers just outside of the college football playoff and a national championship! Ok, that’s not true at all. They don’t have Wisconsin that close whatsoever. Where they do have the Badgers at is playing on New Year’s Day again against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Outback Bowl. The last time Wisconsin played in the Outback Bowl in 2008, when they lost a heartbreaker to Tennessee 21-17.
As we all know, a lot can happen in the course of a college football season. There is a good possibility the season could turn out better than projected or worse than projected. Let’s hope the former happens. The official start to the 2014 season for the Badgers is Saturday, August 30th against the LSU Tigers. Kick off is slated for 8:00 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN.
