We are definitely getting closer to the beginning of college football. The weather is certainly turning warmer and the grass seems a little greener. And also many trophy watch lists are starting to come out with some Wisconsin Badgers landing on those. The latest to come out is the Outland Trophy watch list, given to the best offensive lineman in the country. Badgers offensive tackle Rob Havenstein is one of nine Big Ten linemen to land on the watch list.
Havenstein enters the 2014 season having been named second-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and an honorable mention selection by the media. He also was named a fourth team All-American selection and first team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele. Now Havenstein finds himself on the preseason Outland Trophy watch list.
One of the key components of the Badgers record-setting season a year ago, Havenstein is one of the veterans on the line. Wisconsin set school records for total offense (480.8 yards per game), rushing average (6.6 ypg) and rushing yards (3,689). And this season looks to be no different, especially with running back Melvin Gordon making a run towards the Heisman Trophy.
The SEC led the way (as it usually does in most things) with 19 players on the list. Alabama, Auburn, Oregon, Florida State, Texas A&M and South Carolina all had three players on the list. The Pac-12 had 11 players while the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 all had nine. The Outland Trophy will be awarded December 11 at the annual Home Depot College Football Awards show.
