Another day closer to the kickoff to the 2014 college football season means another college football award watch list has come out. The Rotary Lombardi Award watch list has come out with a massive 123 players from 76 different universities being named. One of those players just happens to be offensive tackle Rob Havenstein of the Wisconsin Badgers.
Now you might be asking yourself just who qualifies for the Rotary Lombardi Award. Well according to their official site www.rotarylombardiaward.org eligibility is as follows:
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
This is the second watch list that Havenstein has landed on in the past week. Last Thursday Havenstein was named to the Outland Trophy watch list as well. The Maryland native started all 13 games for Wisconsin last season and earned second team All-Big Ten honors by the coaches and honorable mention by the media. A key player in opening up holes for running back Melvin Gordon and James White a year ago, Havenstein will once again give Gordon, as well as Corey Clement, lanes to run through this season. Not to mention keep whoever is behind center off their back as little as possible.
The winner of the Rotary Lombardi Award last year was Aaron Donald of Pittsburgh. No Wisconsin Badger has ever won the award.
