You want an example that we are one step closer to the college football season kicking off? The Wisconsin Badgers opened up their fall camp Monday morning. That’s right, the season is just around the corner. And with this team losing some star power from a year ago, head coach Gary Andersen has said that many of the younger players need to step up. On Monday, three freshmen did just that and had an exceptional first day of practice.
Kicker Rafael Gaglianone was impressive in the morning session of practice. Gaglianone nailed a 49-yard field goal and went 5-for-5 on the day. Andersen, who joked about talking the kicking game after just one day of practice, added that Gaglianone was very confident in the morning.
He hit them all and he was very confident,” Andersen said. “He said, ‘Don’t worry, coach, I’ll make them all.’ It was good. I like it. It’s better than saying, ‘Coach, I plan on missing three today.’
Wide receiver George Rushing also had a great first practice of fall camp. Andersen has said that of the three freshmen wide receivers the program has, two of those need to be on the airplane to Houston for the LSU game. First impressions are very important, and Rushing has made a very good first impression on this team. Making tough catches and having an overall consistent morning session, Rushing has taken the first step in being one of those freshmen to be on the plane to Houston later this month.
Extremely impressed with true freshmen Rafael Gaglianone and George Rushing. Both could play this year. #Badgers

Finally running back Taiwan Deal shined in the afternoon practice. Deal will look to be the third-string running back this season behind Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement. Even though it is very early yet, Deal is starting to put himself in a position that Clement was in one year ago. If that’s the case, the future looks very bright for the freshman.
With just one day of fall camp in the books, you can’t help but get excited to see football on the television set every Saturday. And with these young players stepping up to the plate the way they are, it’s hard not to get excited about this upcoming Badgers season.
