The opening weekend of the college football season is fast approaching. Until that time comes, we are stuck with debating who’s the best in the conference and the nation and who will have a breakout year. Big Ten Network took it a step further, having three of their analysts debate which player would have a breakout season in the Big Ten West division. Of the three players picked, one was Wisconsin Badgers running back Corey Clement.
Brent Yarina of BTN.com picked Clement as his breakout player from the Big Ten West. Last season Clement saw action in eight games behind James White and Melvin Gordon. But in those eight games, Clement racked up 547 yards and seven touchdowns on just 67 carries. Again, that was behind both White and Gordon. Imagine what he will be able to do this season when he gets at least twice as many rushing attempts.
Yarina shares that same sentiment as to why he thinks Clement will breakout this season, via BTN.org:
It’s rarely, if ever, just one Wisconsin running back torching opposing defenses. This season, the big and powerful Clement will give the Badgers a second dangerous runner to go along with star Melvin Gordon. Clement ran for 547 yards and seven scores on 67 carries as the third option last year, so it will be fun to see what he does with, say, 170 totes.
The powerful Clement will be a nice change of pace from Gordon and the duo has the potential to repeat the success of the two-headed monster from one year ago. Although I think Gordon will get a good chunk of the rushes, don’t be surprised to see a repeat of the success on the ground from 2013.
