Without a doubt, Wisconsin Badgers running back Melvin Gordon is one of the best players in the country. He’s definitely one of the most explosive players in the nation. Many accolades have come his way, the latest being named to the first team of the SI.com Preseason All-America Team.
Gordon finished last season with 1,609 yards and 12 touchdowns. He rushed for over 100 yards eight times, including four-straight to open up the 2013 season. Gordon’s season high came against Arizona State (aka the Debacle in the Desert) when he ran for 193 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Because of such a great season last year, Gordon has earned numerous preseason honors and landing on various watch lists. Not only does he land on the SI.com Preseason All-America team, he’s also named to the first-team by Athlon and Phil Steele. Gordon is also on Steele’s, Athlon’s and Sporting News first-team All-Big Ten team.
The accolades don’t stop there. The prolific running back is also on the Maxwell Award watch list, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award watch list and Doak Walker Award Watch list.
Joining Gordon at the running back position on SI.com’s Preseason first-team, All-America team is Georgia Bulldogs Todd Gurley. Both him and Gordon will be competing for top running back in the country and both have the potential to end the season as Heisman Trophy finalists.
Headlining the list is reigning Heisman Trophy winner and Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston. No shock there as he is already one of the front-runners to win the award once again.
Gordon’s running back counterpart from the Big Ten, Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah, found himself on the second-team. Joining Gordon on the first-team is Michigan State’s defensive lineman Shilique Calhoun.
