The Wisconsin Badgers have an important Big Ten matchup with Michigan State Thursday

The Wisconsin Badgers head to East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans Thursday night in a Big Ten Conference matchup with plenty of conference implications.

Wisconsin is currently riding a seven-game winning streak that extends back to January 17, when the Badgers knocked off the then No. 4 Spartans at the Kohl Center in a thrilling 77-76 game. The Badgers have won six straight following that game, including last Saturday’s 70-57 win over the No. 2 Maryland Terrapins.

Wisconsin is now looking to further improve its post-season resume, and Michigan State is one of the best opportunities remaining on the schedule. It will be a tough road battle for the Badgers, who will need their big guns to be locked and loaded.

That, of course, includes Nigel Hayes, who leads the team in points per game (17.1) and assists per game (3.3), and is second on the squad in rebounds per game (5.8). Bronson Koenig averages 13.4 points for the Badgers, adding 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Despite two down games in terms of points scored, Ethan Happ remains the Badgers third-leading scorer at 11.6 per game, adding a team-high 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.

More from Wisconsin Basketball

The Badgers have seen junior forward Vitto Brown go off for career nights in each of the past two games, scoring 18 against Nebraska then 21 against Maryland. Brown averages 9.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Zak Showalter, too, played a big role in Wisconsin’s win over the Terrapins, scoring 11 points. He averages 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.

Wisconsin’s bench has seen its playing time steadily rise under Greg Gard, and Jordan Hill, Charlie Thomas, Khalil Iverson and Alex Illikainen are all averaging about 20 minutes per game. The Badgers have needed this depth in the past few games as they’ve had some foul issues at times.

The Badgers will take on a tough Michigan State squad who is heavily favored and coming off of a big win over Indiana following a tough loss to Purdue. The Spartans are led by Denzel Valentine, who is as hot as anyone in college basketball. He averages 19.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game, and has scored a combined 57 points and added 23 assists in the Spartans’ last two games.

Senior guard Bryn Forbes adds 14.0 points per game and senior forward Matt Costello adds 10.3 points and 8.3 rebounds a game. Eron Harris is Michigan State’s fourth-leading scoring option at 9.3 per game.
