Wisconsin opens the 2016 NCAA Tournament against the Pitt Panthers
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Seriously, there’s not much out there better in sports than the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. The madness for the Wisconsin Badgers, who enter the big dance as a seven seed, begins Friday as they take on 10th-seed Pitt Panthers.
After a very rocky start to the season, Wisconsin finished the regular season strong by winning 11 of their final 13 games. They cooled off a bit after their embarrassing loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten tournament.
But they are led by a couple of juniors who have been here before in Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig who are the team’s top two scorers. Hayes is averaging 16.3 points per game, Koening 13.4 and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Ethan Happ has added 12.1 while leading the team with 7.8 rebounds per game.
On the other hand, Pitt started the season hot by winning 14 of their first 15 games and scoring in bunches while winning in mostly blow out fashion. They have stumbled in the second half of the season but are also led by a formidable duo in Michael Young and Jamel Artis.
Young leads the team with 16 points and seven rebounds per game while Artis is right behind him with 14.4 points per game. Either Young or Artis has been the team’s leading scorer in the majority of Pitt’s games.
Not only can they score, but they rebound very well on both ends of the floor which can make this pesky team hard to beat.
Let the madness, begin!
