BYU is 125th nationally out of 130 teams in scoring (11.0 points/game).  Why has the offense struggled so much?

Lawless Republic:  There are a number of reasons for the offensive struggles.  First, I don’t think the Cougars have the necessary talent to run Ty Detmer’s offense successfully.  It worked in 2016, but that team featured the school’s all-time lead rusher (Jamaal Williams, who now plays for the Green Bay Packers) and one of the best athletes in school history, quarterback Taysom Hill (formerly with the Packers now with the New Orleans Saints).

It’s a tall order to replace that kind of top-end talent, which is showing in 2017.  Ultimately, once ethis new coaching staff is dealing with all of their recruits – as opposed to players who were recruited by the old staff – I think the offense will turn around.

Moving forward, I think the answer is to simplify things and modify the offense to include a faster tempo and more spread sets.  That’s where quarterback Tanner Mangum is the most comfortable.

Badger of Honor Reaction: Wisconsin has seen a little tempo thus far this season against both Utah State and Florida Atlantic.  So far the results have been fine but this time Jim Leonhard’s defense will be dealing with it at altitude.
