Wisconsin Football Countdown: No. 47, Ed Jankowski

As the countdown to the first Wisconsin football game of the season continues, Badger of Honor is taking a look at Badgers by the numbers, checking in on a different Badger or Badgers players who wore the number corresponding with the remaining days until the Badgers head to Texas to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday, Sept. 5.

Next up in our countdown, signifying 47 days until college football is back, is Ed Jankowski.

The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native played fullback for the Badgers back in the 1930s, and spent 1934 to 1936 in the Badgers backfield.

He was the Jimmy Demetral Team MVP in both 1935 and 1936. He was a Chicago Tribune All-Star in 1937.

Jankowski played five seasons with the Packers as a running back, and was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1984.

Jankowksi was the ninth overall selection in the 1937 NFL Draft by the Green bay Packers. He was the first Badgers player to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in Wisconsin history.

In 1939 Jankowski joined former Badgers Milt Gantenbein and Charles Goldberg as the first Badgers to play in the Pro Bowl.

• End E.A. Zeise first wore No. 47 for the Badgers back in 1927.

Who wears No. 47 now?

• Two Badgers currently wear No. 47. On offense, freshman tight end Mitchell Herl will wear No. 47 this year. He is a walk-on out of Middleton, Wisconsin. On defense, Vince Biegel sports No. 47. He will be one of the best linebackers in the Big Ten this season, teaming with No. 58 Joe Schobert to form a strong duo of outside linebackers.
