Wisconsin Football Countdown: No. 73, Dan Lanphear

As the countdown to the first Wisconsin football game of the season continues, Badger of Honor is taking a look at Badgers by the numbers, checking in on a different Badger or Badgers players who wore the number corresponding with the remaining days until the Badgers head to Texas to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday, Sept. 5.
Next up in our countdown, signifying xx days until college football is back, is offensive tackle Dan Lanphear.
Wisconsin Badgers
At UW from 1957 to 1959, Lanphear was a Wisconsin legacy player, following in his father — George’s — footsteps and joining the Badgers.
Lanphear played on the 1959 Rose Bowl team that fell to the Washington Huskies. During his time at UW, the Badgers went 20-7-1.
He was a unanimous consensus All-American in 1959, a first team All-Big Ten tackle in 1959, and in 1969 was voted to Wisconsin’s All-Time Team in conjunction with the centennial celebration of college football.
Lanphear was an eighth round selection (90th overall) in the 1960 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although he never played a game for Pittsburgh, he found his way onto the professional field as a defensive end for the American Football League’s Houston Oilers in 1960 and 1962.
He was inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, and into the Wisconsin Athletic Department Hall of Fame in 2010.

• Guard Henry Kramraj first wore No. 73 in 1932.
Who wore No. 73 last?
• Offensive lineman Dallas Lewallen was the last to sport No. 73, wearing the jersey from 2011-2014.
