After missing his entire rookie season with a torn ACL, former Wisconsin Badger standout Jared Abbrederis’ roster spot is in jeopardy. In SB Nation’s 53-man roster projection for the Packers, Abbrederis was left off the list. Meanwhile, Bleacher Report had the Packers making the rare move of keeping six wide receivers on their roster, the last one being Abbrederis. The one thing everyone agrees on is that it is going to be a close call.

  • It certainly doesn’t help his case that the Packers have one of the deepest and most talented pools of receivers in the NFL. Obviously, stalwarts Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are locks to make the roster, as is Davante Adams, a talented 2013 second-round pick.

2nd year player Jeff Janis has elite physical tools, has drawn raves from coaches, and is reported to be miles ahead of Abbrederis. The Packers also used a third round pick on wide receiver Ty Montgomery out of Stanford. At this point, it would be a shock if the Packers decided to part ways with either of those young talents.

So where does that leave Abbrederis? While it may seem bleak, he still has a chance to show the coaches that he is worth a roster spot. Even if he doesn’t beat out Janis, there is still a decent chance that the Packers will keep six wideouts.  But, it’s all going to depend on his performance in training camp and the preseason.

First of all, he is going to need to showcase his exceptional route-running skills and the reliable hands that made him a star at Wisconsin. In addition, Abbrederis will need to show that he is 100% healthy, and can run and cut at full speed. He is also going to have to prove to the coaches that he’s in good enough physical shape to not be considered injury prone.

If all that happens, Abby will probably find his way on to the roster as the sixth receiver.

Update- After the completion of this article, Abbrederis got hurt (not his knee luckily) and it’s unclear how much of training camp he will miss. Hopefully it is just a stinger, and he will be back some time this week.

Update #2- It has now been reported that Abbrederis received a concussion. Head injuries have been an issue for him in the past, and was one of the main reasons he slipped to the 5th round in the 2014 NFL draft. Hopefully he will be able to take the field by the end of preseason. And even more important than that, hopefully his long term health is not affected.
