#23 Wisconsin vs. #8 Stanford: January 1, 2013

Rose Bowl: Wisconsin 14, Stanford 20

The Big Ten championship game victory in 2012 sent the Badgers t the Rose Bowl for the third straight season after consecutive Rose Bowl losses to TCU and Oregon, but the Badgers were unable to break the trend and earn a Rose Bowl victory.

The Badgers headed into the game without head coach Bret Bielema, who had left Wisconsin for the Arkansas job following the regular season. In his stead, Barry Alvarez hit the sidelines to coach the Badgers.

Stanford took the early 14-0 lead on touchdown runs from Kelsey Young and Stepfan Taylor, but Wisconsin answered with a second-quarter Montee Ball touchdown rumble from 11 yards out. After a Stanford field goal, Curt Phillips found Jordan Frederick for a four-yard touchdown to make it a 17-14 halftime score.

Stanford added a field goal late in the fourth to cap the scoring as Wisconsin’s last-chance drive fell short on an interception with just over two minutes to play.

In the loss, Montee Ball became the first player in Rose Bowl history to score a touchdown in three straight Rose Bowls.
