The road to the Final Four continues this weekend as second round matchups kickoff Saturday for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen. Top seed Villanova Wildcats will take on the eight seed in the East region the Wisconsin Badgers.

Villanova comes in as the defending national champions. Wisconsin is looking to get back to the Final Four once again after a one year absence. These two heavyweights square off in a highly anticipated second round matchup to secure a spot in this year’s Sweet Sixteen.

The Wildcats had a slow start in their first round matchup against Mount St. Mary’s, having trailed by eight early on at one point. Villanova would get things figured in the second half going on a 13-0 run early and were able to finish off the Mountaineers 76-56 and looking like the championship contending team they are. Donte DiVincenzo came off the bench to lead Villanova with 21 points. Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges scored 14 points and 13 points, respectively, to help pace the Wildcats.

Wisconsin on the other hand had a tougher time with the Virginia Tech Hokies in their opening round matchup Thursday night. Bronson Koenig put the Badgers on his back and carried them to a 84-74 victory. Koenig hit a school-record eight three pointers to score a game-high 28 points. Nigel Hayes added 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Badgers while Ethan Happ struggled to get to his 10 point mark. After missing the Big Ten tournament due to a death in the family, Khalil Iverson added 11 points and seven rebounds in his return.

The Badgers are the only team in the country to make the Sweet 16 in the past three seasons, a testament to the experience of head coach Greg Gard’s team. Villanova entered the tournament with more wins than any defending champion and is looking to become the first back-to-back champion since the Florida Gators in 2007.
