Wisconsin Football: 10 Things to know about the Maryland Terrapins
DETROIT, MI – DECEMBER 26: D.J. Moore
Q: Maryland’s last bowl win was in 2010. Will they win one this season?
A: As I mentioned on the previous question, it’s going to be an uphill battle but a bowl game definitely isn’t out of the question. As for the result, it’s really going to depend on who Maryland draws. If it’s in the ballpark of a Boston College again, I’d expect a victory for sure.
The Terps had a horrendous first half, but still nearly pulled off a tremendous comeback win. The team should be improved on both sides of the ball which will help.
Badger of Honor Reaction:
Frankly, I think the Terps can get win. They only lost 36-30 last season in the Quick Lane Bowl, a game they trailed 29-13 at the half. Maryland didn’t lose, the simply ran out of time.
These bowl droughts are sometimes silly to discuss. Does a Terrapin victory in the Quick Lane Bowl really change the outlook dramatically for the 2017 squad? I’d say no. I’m not convinced the Badgers triumph over USC in the Holiday Bowl was predicate for the team’s Cotton Bowl win the following season.
However, it’s still relevant if for no other reason to get a win so the team doesn’t have to think, talk, or hear about it again. It also probably generates a sigh of relief from Durkin along with some Maryland boosters and the AD.
Finally, a bowl win is a little showcase for the program and helps the recruiting pitch. I also like teams being bowl eligible no matter how early in the bowl calendar (meaning less prestige) because it gives you some extra practice time.
