Wisconsin Football: 10 Things to know about the Maryland Terrapins
DETROIT, MI – DECEMBER 26: Perry Hills
Q: Who will be the new QB for the Terps in 2017?
A: That’s still to be determined. There’s an open competition and we should know more once practices get underway. As we saw last season, Durkin isn’t afraid to give anyone a fair shot to rise up the depth chart if they perform well in camp.
It looks like the starting job will go to either North Carolina transfer Caleb Henderson or sophomore Tyrrell Pigrome. Henderson has barely seen the field at the collegiate level while Pigrome appeared in 11 games including one start.
Pigrome is extremely athletic but still needs work when it comes to throwing the football. Henderson looked solid in the spring, but didn’t get a chance to play in Maryland’s Spring Game due to a minor injury.
True freshman Kasim Hill will factor into the race due to his immense upside. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Hill saw the field quite a bit in 2017. As for when the season opens against Texas, it’ll be a surprise if Henderson isn’t under center.
Badger of Honor:
This answer screams time-share to me. If no single player emerges and covers himself in glory there is no reason for the Maryland coaching staff to hand one guy the keys. More likely, this sounds like Maryland is going to have different packages and plays they run with each QB.
Each guy may have short leash if his off the mark or turning the ball over. It’s not the worst thing to have different hands on the steering wheel for the offense so long as it doesn’t destroy offensive rhythm.
Said less charitably, there really may not be much of a difference between 1st and 2nd string for the Terrapins offense so the coaching staff keeps the competition going into the season and hope somebody distinguishes himself and seizes the job.
