The New York Giants 2017 season appears over before it started.  Big Blue fell to 0-5 losing to Melvin Gordon and the LA Chargers on Sunday

Worse yet for the New York Giants, the wide receiver depth chart has been gutted by injury.

Boat enthusiast and star wideout Odell Beckham and free agent acquisition Brandon Marshall are lost for the season.  Slot receiver Sterling Shepard is injured and Dwayne Harris broke his foot.

So the New York Giants need to make some personnel moves to field a full roster.

Therefore, Badger of Honor encourages the New York Giants to sign former Wisconsin Badger Robert Wheelwright.  He was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL preseason.

The 2017 season is a lost one so there’s no sense in the New York Giants signing veteran fillers.  No offense to Victor Cruz, but I’m not sure the wisdom in bringing him back when the team is playing for 2018.

The smarter long-term move is to take a flier or two on young underdeveloped guys and hope somebody emerges.  That’s also a more affordable option.

Brandon Marshall is 6-feet-5-inches.  The Giants have two big WR on its practice squad at present.  Marquis Bundy (6-feet-4-inches, 215 pounds) from New Mexico and Darius Powe (6-feet-3-inches 220 pounds) from California.

If they promote either Bundy or Powe, that would open a place on the practice squad.  So if the Giants don’t want to sign Wheelwright right to the active roster they could store him on the practice squad as he learns the offense.

Wheelwright is an interesting prospect.  He doesn’t boast elite speed (4.54) but his three-cone, (6.68) is fantastic signifying great quickness and change of direction.

The three-cone would have ranked him tied for fourth best at the NFL Combine.  In addition, his 20-yard shuttle (4.11) would have been 7th best at the Combine.  The 38-inch vertical leap is a sign of good explosiveness too.

So the Giants should give Wheelwright a look to contribute in 2017 with an eye towards brighter seasons in the big apple.
