Purdue Offense
Purdue’s offense hasn’t lived up to historical average thus far this season. Yet, the Boilers still have won three games so the offense is generally doing enough. But this is not the Purdue of Drew Brees years where a race to 40 points determined the winner.
The Boilers are currently #5 in total offense, and #6 in scoring in the Big Ten. But its rushing offense is the third lowest in the conference.
Purdue quarterback David Blough is not among the top ten passers in the Big Ten. However, he is fourth in passing efficiency, a category Alex Hornibrook still leads. Blough is completing 68.9 percent of his passes which is the top mark in the Big Ten.
Here are the Purdue national offensive statistics according to NCAA numbers.
- Scoring Offense (29.6 points per game), #67
- Total Offense (401.4 yards per game), #76
- 3rd Down Percentage (.343) #100
- Red Zone Offense (.950)(14 touchdowns, five field goals) #8
- First Downs (107)(54 passing, 45 rushing) #78
- Passing Efficiency (141.04) #47
- Passing Yards Per Completion (11.73) #81
- Rushing Offense (136.2 yards per game) #93
- Tackles For Loss Allowed (6.2 per game) #82
So in general, the most important thing for the Badger defense is to recognize the Boilers aren’t going to run the ball well. Nobody does against Wisconsin so that’s not new.
But Purdue is having success in the red zone. So preventing some big pass plays to quickly get the Boilers in scoring range is critical. In general, it’s a fairly pedestrian offense. An elite defense like Wisconsin’s shouldn’t be troubled.
