James Williams committed to the Wisconsin football program over the weekend.

Wisconsin Football is building a pipeline in Florida. With the commitment of James Williams, a three-star cornerback out of Hollywood, Florida, the Badgers are continuing to add to their already strong class of 2019.

The Badgers beat out Florida, Nebraska and Ole Miss, among others, for Williams’ services. He has good size for a corner and is from a rich recruiting ground. The state of Florida has done the Wisconsin program well in recent years when it comes to recruiting.

Wisconsin’s secondary is unproven this year for the first time in a while. Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard will have his hands full with the inexperienced bunch. If anybody can coach them up, it’s Leonhard. Williams will have his shot at playing time in 2019, but he’ll have to fight through the depth chart along the way.

With the current group of corners being so young, Williams may be redshirted his freshman year. A redshirt year is often a blessing in disguise. It means we have to wait an extra year before Williams hits the field, but the extra year of training and coaching can work wonders. Especially in a program with the track record of player development like Wisconsin.

If the cornerback group struggles in 2018 I wouldn’t be surprised to see Williams get his chance to earn playing time. After all, only Dontye Carriere-Williams has significant playing experience. And even Carriere-Williams is only a sophomore.

Williams still has his senior season left to play at Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Florida. Last year, his Lions went 11-2 and held opponents to five shutouts. They also won the state championship at the 3A level. As he continues to improve his rating as a player and get better, Williams will be part of a winning culture that he can bring with him to Madison.
