The defensive savant and schematic genius has many holes to fill after a successful first year as defensive coordinator.  From a national perspective, there is a high level of concern. Internally, Wisconsin knows they have the perfect coach for the challenge.  Before the Badgers line up against the Hilltoppers, Jim Leonhard has some questions to answer.

After losing more than half of his starters from a year ago, many expect a regression from Jim Leonhard’s defensive unit.  Three veteran defensive linemen are gone, two starting outside linebackers and cornerbacks have moved on and D’Cota Dixon is the only returning safety with substantial experience.  It seems like an overwhelming situation for a second-year defensive coordinator who is entering only his third year as a coach.  But after last year’s performances how much can you doubt Leonhard’s ability to coach up the Wisconsin defense?

Despite the turnover in personnel, Leonhard still has some absolute studs returning to his lineup.  The Wisconsin defense will still be led by the inside linebacking law firm of Edwards & Connelly as well as the underrated nose tackle Olive Sagapolu.  These three along with hard-hitting safety D’Cota Dixon will provide valuable senior leadership to a young but hungry defensive unit.  With many options at many positions, Leonhard will have to take full advantage of fall camp in order to determine the most effective corps. Wisconsin has shown its as good at replenishing talent as anyone in the country.

Here are the most compelling questions Jim Leonhard must answer before the start of the season.
