Rising Star: WR Quintez Cephus

The Rising Star of the team is somebody you expect to become a bonafide star. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ but a matter of ‘when’. This year, it’s Quintez Cephus’ time. Some may say Cephus’ star has already risen, but I don’t think it’s all the way there. The ceiling for this guy has yet to be established.

Cephus didn’t even participate in a full nine games last season when he was injured during the Indiana game. At that point, Cephus had over 500 yards receiving and six receiving touchdowns. At the rate he was hauling in passes and scoring touchdowns, he was on pace for about an 800-yard season and close to double-digit touchdowns. Considering the talent around him at the receiver position, and in the backfield, that’s a very strong year for a Wisconsin wide receiver.

The talent is there for Cephus. He’s already shown it on Saturdays and he reminded everybody this Spring of what he can do. The Badgers showed signs late last year that throwing the ball might become more common in the offense. With Cephus back, the receiver group in tow, and Alex Hornibrook’s arrow trending upwards, Cephus could climb the ranks of the best receivers in the Big Ten by year’s end.

Cephus should be the top target on the perimeter this year. Even if his numbers aren’t gaudy like some others in pass-happy offenses, they’ll be enough to certify him as a star in the Big Ten.
