A lot of what was just said about Scott Nelson can be said about Jake Ferguson. He’s young, inexperienced, surrounded by hype, and he played incredibly well in multiple facets of the game.

Ferguson was on the receiving end of several first down throws by Alex Hornibrook hauling in four catches for 43 yards. He found open field consistently and looked like he had been part of Wisconsin’s offense for years.

Must Read. Jake Ferguson was a standout performer in week one. light

In the running game, he was out in front of Jonathan Taylor on both touchdowns, freeing Taylor with a key block on one of them. As great as he is as a pass-catcher, if he doesn’t prove himself as a blocker he’s not going to be on the field very often. It was promising to see him play well in that regard.

Ferguson is still in the early part of his Wisconsin career and has much more to learn and plenty of room to grow. One week is fantastic, but I’m looking to see him establish a trend of being a reliable receiver for Honrbiook as well as a willing blocker in the running game.

Ferguson’s first career touchdown is something that’s in play this week against New Mexico. He showed he can be trusted down the field so look for some red zone targets as Ferguson becomes more entrenched in the offense.
