Wisconsin Football: Key matchups to watch vs. BYU
By Steven Tondi
Danny Davis vs. BYU Secondary
Danny Davis has served his two-game suspension and will be available to play this Saturday. The return of Davis gives the Wisconsin offense an explosive weapon in the passing game. Davis has the ability to run any kind of route, but he turns heads by his playmaking down the field. Down the stretch last season, Davis hauled in plenty of big-time catches when the Badgers desperately needed one. The Badgers have the potential to be deadly in three-receiver sets with Davis being paired with Taylor and Pryor.
Despite being suspended for two games, Davis was able to practice with the team. He should be ready to go and be without any limitations. A.J. Taylor has thrived in the first two games, catching ten balls for 219 yards and a touchdown. Taylor, as well as Pryor, will only benefit from Davis’ return. Defenses will have to compensate for all three receivers as they all have the ability to beat you deep. I am eager to see how much Chryst uses Davis in his return against BYU.
The secondary of BYU is probably the weak link of the Cougars’ defense. This is by no means a bad unit but they can be exposed. They seem to lack quick athletes at the cornerback position, relying more on their physicality when covering receivers and tight ends. This leads them susceptible to deep fly and post routes by quick receivers.
Wisconsin exposed this weakness in the game last year and will look to do it once again on Saturday. This is a unit led by upperclassmen who are driven to shut down the Wisconsin passing game after being picked apart by Alex Hornibrook last year.
I expect Davis to have a big impact in this game. He is highly motivated and seems determined to build upon what he accomplished last year. His ability to toy with opposing corners is something Wisconsin fans have rarely seen, and he is only a true sophomore. I would not be stunned to see Davis show us all that he is one of the best receivers in the Big Ten this Saturday.
