Wisconsin Football remains in the thick of things for 2019 defensive end Taurean Carter.

Last weekend was one to forget for Wisconsin, as the Badgers saw their College Football Playoff dreams destroyed for good after getting blown out by Michigan on Saturday night. However, there was a blip of good news from the recruiting trail that may have gotten lost in the shuffle for many Badger fans still caught up in the agony of the crushing loss.

The encouraging development came courtesy of class of 2019 defensive end Taurean Carter (Mansfield, Texas), who announced on Sunday evening that he has narrowed his recruitment down to three schools: Wisconsin, Arkansas, and Michigan State.

The 3-star defensive end was offered by the Wisconsin staff back in August, despite Carter having already come out with a top four that included Arkansas, Michigan State, Texas, and Texas Tech by that time. The 6’3, 260-pounder has additional offers from programs such as Colorado, Florida, Houston, Indiana, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU, and SMU.

It’s certainly encouraging that Wisconsin succeeded in making the cut over home-state schools Texas and Texas Tech, despite being relatively late to the game in Carter’s recruitment. That being said, he has scheduled his final decision announcement for October 24, which puts Wisconsin at a significant disadvantage because Carter has not yet visited Madison, and there does not appear to be a visit scheduled at the moment. It seems highly unlikely that he would choose the Badgers without setting foot on campus first.

In addition, Arkansas appears to be the heavy favorite to secure his services at this time. Carter took an official visit to Fayetteville during the first weekend of the month and has been there multiple times throughout his recruitment. Arkansas also has a commitment from one of his teammates at Mansfield Legacy in defensive tackle Enoch Jackson and is a favorite to land another in safety Jalen Catalon.

The outlook here appears to be pretty bleak for the Badgers right now, but if they can somehow manage to get him in for an official visit perhaps that could swing things in their favor. Setting up a visit with just eight days until Carter’s decision could be a pretty difficult undertaking, though.

Wisconsin currently has defensive line commitments from Gio Paez (Cornelius, NC) and Keeanu Benton (Janesville, WI) in its 2019 class, but the staff would like to add another. The Badgers do still remain a top contender to land defensive tackle Rodas Johnson (Columbus, OH).
