Wisconsin Basketball: Who is the second best player on the team?
Verdict: D’Mitrik Trice
After much self-thought, I’ve come to the conclusion that involves the least amount of overthinking. Trice is the second best player on the team because he’s the second biggest threat to score and he does have true takeover ability when his shot is falling. Despite his size, his release is quick enough to get a shot off even when the defense knows it’s coming. More importantly, he’s not too selfish to take a bad shot in a big moment. If the defense is absolutely blanketing him, I trust Trice to give up the rock.
I really wanted to award Reuvers here because I love his game, and he’s getting better at a faster rate than anybody else on the team, but he just hasn’t shown enough yet. Reuvers will be a star at Wisconsin someday. I’m sure of that. But his time isn’t now. I could very well be changing my mind if he continues to play down the stretch as he did against Maryland.
Trice is the answer because when Wisconsin struggles as a team, it’s usually because scoring is hard to come by. Having a second scoring threat is far more important than having a second good defender, or a second good hustler on the floor. The Badgers need the three to fall if they’re going to win games in March. Trice has to be the one to make that happen.
