Wisconsin Basketball: Badgers look to extend nation’s top winning streak vs. UWGB

Wisconsin basketball is back in action tonight when they host UW-Green Bay.

The fourth-ranked Wisconsin basketball team is back on the court tonight. They will welcome Will Ryan and the UW-Green Bay Phoenix. While looking to go 3-0 on the season, the Badgers will also be looking to extend the nation’s longest current winning streak.

Yes. You read that right.

Dating back to last season, the Wisconsin basketball team has won 10-straight games. They finished their 2019-2020 campaign winning eight games before the season was ended abruptly by the covid pandemic. This season, they have started 2-0 with some easy wins over some lesser teams.

Tonight, they will have a chance to go for 11-straight with a win over the in-state Green Bay Pheonix led by new head coach, Will Ryan. The Phoenix come to Madison with an 0-1 record, with a loss to the Minnesota Gophers, 99-69, last Wednesday.

Let’s take a quick preview of what to expect in the Badger-Phoenix matchup tonight.

Wisconsin

Coming into tonight, Nate Reuvers and Micah Potter lead the way in the scoring department, averaging 16.0 and 14.0 points per game, respectively. Not far behind them is the starting point guard, D’Mitrik Trice, with 13.0 points per game. Trice also has 8 assists this season with 0 turnovers. He has been very efficient through the first two games.

Aside from the total domination in the first two contests, some of the freshmen on the squad are making some headlines. Johnny Davis and Ben Carlson are getting plenty of playing time and showing that they are ready to contribute now, rather than in the future. Along with sophomore forward, Tyler Wahl, this Wisconsin basketball team looks like it is ready to contend for the next few years.

Green Bay

In their lone game, the Pheonix were led in scoring by sophomore guard, Amari Davis. He scored 17 points against the Gophers.

Opposite of Wisconsin, this Green Bay team doesn’t have a ton of depth. They had only six players play for more than seven minutes. Davis and P.J. Pipes each had more than 30 in their last game. Wisconsin’s ability to sub players and keep themselves fresh could be a big problem for the Phoenix tonight.

They also went just 3-of-16 from beyond the arc. That is something Wisconsin will also look to take advantage of. With Reuvers, Potter, and Carlson in the middle of the paint, Green Bay will have to be able to hit some shots from outside if they want a shot at upsetting Wisconsin tonight.

Prediction

ESPN’s Basketball Power Index (BPI) gives the Badgers a 97.8% chance to win tonight. According to Bovada, the Badgers are 25.5-point favorites tonight.

I think this game will be similar to the Arkansas-Pine Bluff game, but not quite as out of hand. The Badgers will get up comfortably early and rotate plenty of players in to stay fresh for the Marquette game coming up on Friday.
