Wisconsin Football: Badgers will face Wake Forest in Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Wisconsin football will face Wake Forest in their bowl game this year.

After their victory over the Minnesota Gophers, the Wisconsin football team finished the season with a 3-3 record and are eligible for a bowl game. Today, the Badgers accepted an invite to play in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, extending their bowl streak to 19-straight bowl appearances. What an awesome name. This is the first year of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. This bowl game was formerly known as the Belk Bowl.

The Badgers will be facing off with Wake Forest, out of the ACC. The game will be played on December 30th at 11:00 AM central time. It will take place at Bank of America Stadium, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Wake Forest isn’t generally thought of as a football school. I think when most people think of Wake Forest, they think of the basketball teams they had in the ’90s and then the early 2000’s with Chris Paul.

Football? Not so much.

Head coach Dave Clawson is in his seventh season as the Wake Forest head coach. When he came to Wake, the program was down and kind of a joke. It took him a couple of years, but he has led the Demon Deacons to a winning record and a bowl game in four straight seasons. In those bowl games, Wake has a 3-1 record, including a win in the Belk Bowl in 2017.

This season, the Demon Deacons are sitting at 4-4, but looking at their schedule, it is a strong 4-4. Their four losses have all come at the hands of ranked teams. They lost to Clemson in their first game of the season, 13-37, which seems relatively close considering Clemson just beat no. 2 Notre Dame 34-10 in the ACC Championship Game.

Wisconsin football will have less than two weeks to prepare for their bowl game. It wasn’t a pretty season, but the Badgers were able to make it to a bowl game, which is more than a lot of other teams can say.
