Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin football team are back in the mix for Southlake, Texas cornerback, Avyonne Jones. Jones committed to Oklahoma St. in April but decided to reopen his recruiting earlier this week.

The Badgers are expected to be players in Jones’ recruitment. The Badgers offered Jones a scholarship back in February. He is scheduled to officially visit Wisconsin on June 17th.

Recruiting profile

Avyonne Jones is a 3-star cornerback out of Southlake, Texas. According to 247Sports, Jones is the 96th ranked cornerback in the country and 984th overall.

He has offers from Arizona, Oklahoma St., Arkansas, Cal, Mississippi St., Northwestern, Wisconsin, Texas Tech, and more.

He has visits scheduled with Arizona (June 4), Oklahoma St. (June 9), and Wisconsin (June 17).

In his junior season at Southlake, he helped lead his team to a runner-up finish in the Texas 6A Division 1 state playoffs. During that season he recorded 46 tackles, three for a loss, and an interception to go with 13 passes defended. He was named to the Texas District 4-6A first-team at cornerback.

Wisconsin football is expected to be in the running to land Jones. 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong expects Wisconsin to be one of two teams to keep an eye on for Jones (paywall).

Roster outlook

Should Jones commit to Wisconsin he will be the first cornerback to commit in the 2022 class. Currently, Wisconsin has just one commitment overall in the class: quarterback Myles Burkett. But once official visits start happening, I would expect that number to rise quickly.

The Badgers should be in the market for multiple cornerbacks. On the roster, they have nine cornerbacks, and after the 2021 season, they could be down to six on the roster. Adding some more depth to the position is probably high up on the list for Jim Leonhard.

Along with Jones, the Badgers are also recruiting cornerbacks A’Khoury Lyde and Caleb Coley. They will both visit Madison on June 4th as a part of a big recruiting weekend for the Wisconsin football program.
