Wisconsin football lost a 3-star recruit today when CB Austin Alexander, class of 2024, de-committed from UW and re-opened his recruitment.

Here yesterday, gone today

Having committed to Wisconsin under interim head coach Jim Leonhard on Halloween, Alexander nonetheless confirmed his commitment to the Badgers after Luke Fickell was officially hired. Nebraska had sought to take advantage of the flux of uncertainty by offering Alexander a scholarship on November 16th.

This past weekend, at UW’s Junior Day, Alexander seemed eager and happy to be a future Badger. In a tweet posted only yesterday, Rivals Jon McNamara quoted how Alexander thought Coach Fickell was “a great guy”.

What a difference a day makes

USC offered Alexander yesterday, as did Northern Illinois. A little more than 24 hours later, McNamara posted a new and completely different tweet. Iowa State officially offered today as well.

Alexander did say that he would definitely consider Wisconsin again in the re-opening of his recruitment.

What changed with Wisconsin Football?

In a quote given to Allen Trieu of 247 Sports, Alexander said “I’m looking for consistency, building relationships and seeing if I fall in love with the school with itself.”

The last part is what I have a problem with. The school didn’t change when Fickell was hired. Madison is still an amazing college town and Wisconsin football is, if anything, going to get better. I understand building relationships with the previous staff, but then re-open your recruitment immediately.

He cites that he’s looking for consistency, yet his actions seem to be completely the opposite. He was on campus over the weekend, seemed to have loved everything, and then 3 days later he de-committed and opened his recruitment up again. That doesn’t sound very consistent to me.

Nevertheless, I wish the young man the best of luck in his future endeavors. If he ends up at USC, maybe Wisconsin can play him when USC joins the Big Ten.
