Friday night saw the Badgers wrestling squad took to the mats Friday evening against Northwestern. In no other sport would you see a team with a 7-6 record be ranked 15th in the nation. That’s exactly where Wisconsin is, which says so much about the absolute dominance of Big Ten wrestling. SEC football has NOTHING on Big Ten wrestling.

Wisconsin started off the match with a hard-fought 4-3 victory by Eric Barnett. The Badgers then went slightly cold, losing 3 consecutive matches. One of the most anticipated matches of the evening, Wisconsin’s 149 Austin Gomez, ranked #2 in the nation at that weight had to withdraw for an injury default against Northwestern’s Yayha Thomas, ranked #4, giving the Wildcats a seemingly insurmountable lead.

Wisconsin’s 157, #18 Garret Model immediately starting chipping away at that large deficiet, recording a 4 point major decision. The Badgers #7 Dean Hamiti followed that up with a 14-2 major against #18 Maxx Mayfiled, chopping the nine point lead down to one.

Wisconsin won two of the next three matches to take their first lead of the evening 17-15, going into the heavy-weight dual. #11 Trent Hilger of Wisconsin squared off against #4 Lucas Davison and dropped a close match, 4-1. This game Northwestern the final win of 18-17

As there is no rest for the weary, Wisconsin travels to Lincoln to hook up with #5 Nebraska. The match will be streamed live today on Big Ten Plus at 2 p.m. (CST)
