The rumors have officially been affirmed, as five-star edge rusher out of Goodyear, Arizona, Jalanie George has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. George slots in as the fifth-highest recruit in program history, per 247Sports, and the first five-star defensive commit since 2003. It's the first five-star in all categories since Nolan Rucci in 2021. This is a huge pickup, and that's not understated at all. This only affirms that momentum is shifting on Luke Fickell and his seat is cooling dramatically.

He marks Wisconsin’s third commit already in the class of 2028, propelling the Badgers all the way to the No. 13-ranked recruiting class in the country. George projects as an impact player from Day 1, with some real upside to tap into if things can click in Madison.

The skeptical Badger fan will say, "Let's see if George makes it to signing day." But let's be better than that and celebrate a great thing! A five-star out-of-state recruit has just committed to Wisconsin under Luke Fickell!

His combination of size, bend, and athleticism makes him one of the more toolsy players in the entire class of ’28, with high-end NFL upside if things can click. He also marks Wisconsin’s third commit from Desert Edge High School, as two of his teammates — Yahzeen Zion and Nathan Jones — have announced their commitment to the school.

Is Luke Fickell's job offically secure?

Above all the tangible, on-field impact George will bring to the school, he will also serve as yet another domino falling in the way of head coach Luke Fickell. Entering this season, it was far from a secret that his seat was quite hot, but with the way things have been churning, he may have secured himself a bit of time.

From success in sparking more donors, allowing him to go out and acquire talent in the transfer portal, to big-time success on the grassroots recruiting scene, particularly in the state of Wisconsin, and, of course, to the Badgers’ upset road win over Penn State, Fickell has steered this program in the right direction.

His first few seasons with the team were very poor and well documented as such, meaning that this calendar year was a big-time prove-it year for him. Fickell had to prove that he was capable of morphing the culture and finding high-end talent that could both produce and buy into his message.

Although it is still very early in the year, Fickell sure as hell still has more to prove. There is no doubt that the steps he has been taking recently are exactly what he needed to re-stabilize a tumbling program, but the work is far from finished.

George’s commitment marks yet another step in the right direction for a program in desperate need of just that.
