It's hard to crack the rotation as a true freshman, but Wisconsin offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes told reporters on Friday that one wide receiver will definitely be logging some snaps.
Eugene Hilton Jr., a true freshman out of Indiana, has been turning heads at fall camp and has now earned a role on the Badger offense. While he wouldn't get into specifics, Grimes confirmed the receiver would see the field in year one.
"He definitely will have a role," said Grimes. "I don't want to put numbers on it, but he's one of our better receivers...but he will definitely play. He will be in the rotation."
What impact will Hilton have as a true freshman at Wisconsin?
While receivers Vinny Anthony and Trech Kekahuna have solidified their spots in the offense, the rest of the receiver spots are largely up for grabs. And with the recent injury to tight end Tucker Ashcraft, there may even be more opportunities for receivers to see the field. With potentially more 12 personnel plays, Hilton could see the field as a 3rd or 4th receiver throughout the season.
So far in Luke Fickell's run as head coach, not many true freshman have played meaningful minutes for the Badgers. But now with the departures of Will Pauling, C.J. Williams and Bryson Green, the opportunity for Hilton Jr. has presented itself. Hilton has ideal size and hands for the position, and is obviously ahead of the curve thanks to his NFL father.
Hilton Jr. was the No. 67 overall receiver in the 2025 class, and the Badgers' top recruit at the position. He'll now get a chance to showcase his skills right away in year one.
