Carter Gilmore is everything that's right with Wisconsin basketball and really a testimony to who he is as a person. He came to the Badgers as a walk-on, worked his way into a scholarship, gave it back to be a preferred walk-on again, and created all sorts of magical moments in his 2025 campaign. He was amazing, electric, and easy to root for, which is why his final message to Wisconsin is hard to read.
This one hurts. 😭

On the night Wisconsin lost to BYU, Carter Gilmore had a tear-jerker post on social media
Carter Gilmore has exhausted his eligibility and can no longer be a Wisconsin Badger, which is sad because he's a staple at this point for the locker room and on the court. He took to social media just hours after the loss to BYU in the round of 32 with a caption that said, "Thank you, Wisconsin, for everything!" He had a heart emoji to follow. But what really will get you is the two crying faces above the picture (that you can't see in the clipped version above).
Those two little crying emojis will also make it hard to read. If the fans are gutted by this loss, imagine how the players feel, especially players like Gilmore, who poured everything into this program—his heart, blood, sweat, and now tears. It's tough to read, it's tough to see, but he's part of the magic of 2025.
His performance on multiple occasions this season gave life to a team that needed it. The Northwestern win can almost solely be credited to his ability to get Wisconsin back in the game and make huge shots. At the end of the game, the traveling Wisconsin fans were shouting his name.
That is just one example of Gilly James and the beauty, chemistry, and heart he brought to this program. While he may have thanked Wisconsin for everything, it's easy to say, "Right back at you, Gilly!"
