Confidence levels at every defensive position group for Badger football

The Wisconsin defense looked lost at times in 2024, even allowing 41 points to an Iowa Hawkeyes team. Luke Fickell and company have made huge efforts this offseason to get bigger and better, so what is our confidence level in each unit ahead of the 2025 season?

Defensive Line

Confidence: 60%

One of the worst groups on the 2024 Badgers, this group has now been completely revamped. New transfers Charles Perkins and Parker Peterson bring size and strength, while Jay'Viar Suggs could add some pass rush, which was basically non-existent last season. With so many new starters though, a lot of questions remain. Specifically, how will Peterson and Perkins, who come from Tulane and UT-Martin, adjust to the Big Ten level.

Linebackers

Confidence: 70%

Another group that underperformed last year, linebacker looks to be a whole lot better in 2025. Tackett Curtis and Christian Alliegro are promising players who flashed at times last season and will now have the opportunity for a breakout season. There will most likely be a rotating door at edge, and any number of five or six quality guys could filter in and out. Transfer Mason Reiger, who missed all of last season at Louisville, could be the wildcard the team needs on the outside. With how badly Wisconsin struggled to get after the quarterback in 2024, there's surely going to be a huge emphasis this season.

Secondary

Confidence: 50%

With the departure of Hunter Wohler, the secondary has taken a bit of a hit. Coupled with the uncertainty of cornerback Nyzier Fourqurean's status and the down 2024 season from Ricardo Hallman and suddenly there are a lot of questions to answer. Preston Zachman and Austin Brown are as solid as they come, though, and there's a chance for the unit to be elite if the stars align. I'll feel a lot better once we know Fourqurean has been granted eligibility.
