The Wisconsin Badgers did not want this to happen at all... Early on in their upset bid of the No. 23 Washington Huskies, starting quarterback Danny O'Neil suffered what looks to be a season-ending injury. The San Diego State transfer was making his third start of the season for the Badgers. After scampering for an impressive 21-yard gain, it looks as though he ruptured his Achilles on the run...
He was dealing with Achilles soreness coming in, as running the football is a big part of his game. While Hunter Simmons had been the team's starter dating back to the road loss at Michigan, O'Neil had played in some offensive packages for the Badgers over the last month and change. When he was in there for the Badgers, the offense had an identity based around the threat of him running.
Here is the play where O'Neil sustained the major injury in question and had to swiftly exit the game.

O'Neil had to be carted off the field. He put the towel over his head in what looks to be a major injury for him. In came freshman quarterback Carter Smith with the Badgers' season on the line. With Billy Edwards Jr. still working his way back from a leg injury, it may be Smith and Simmons the rest of the way. It would be shocking if O'Neil was able to suit up the rest of the way for the Badgers this season.
We will have an update on anything to do with O'Neil and the status of his injury as soon as we know.
Danny O'Neil injury update: Badgers QB ruled out with major leg injury
As a surprise to absolutely no one, O'Neil was ruled out from the game midway through the second.

Let's be real. Any time you see a player get carted off the field, it is never a good thing. This means he has a major lower-body injury, one that prevents him from being able to walk on his own accord. The fact O'Neil used a towel to cover his head shows how emotional he was about this potential season-ending injury. Obviously, Wisconsin will want to take a look at it before saying that his season is done.
Overall, you have to wonder why so many of these Wisconsin quarterbacks who have played for Fickell have gotten hurt. O'Neil has joined the likes of Tanner Mordecai, Tyler Van Dyke and teammate Billy Edwards Jr. as Wisconsin quarterbacks who have suffered major injuries over the course of the last three seasons. Can we please get to the offseason without another massive injury like this one?
We will have another update on the status of O'Neil as soon as we know about it. What a tough break.
