Connor Essegian is returning to Kohl Center and his former team, the Wisconsin Badgers, for the first time since he transferred to Nebraska last offseason. He was a star for the Badgers his freshman year after earning a starting spot, and he played an average of 27.4 minutes a game. He made his mark with hot shooting, especially from behind the arch, as he made 69 threes that first season. However, in his sophomore year, he couldn't find his way into valuable minutes, and his production decreased dramatically; he only played 7.3 minutes a game. That led him to look for a fresh start at Nebraska.
Essegian anticipates his return to Wisconsin ahead of the Nebraska matchup.
On social media he posted about his excitement to see his friend John Blackwell again with a "Let's battle on Sunday!" message. It was in response to a quote that was posted by a Wisconsin media member from Blackwell that said, "That's my guy for life. I am proud of him." Blackwell said he was happy for Essegian and his success at Nebraska, "I’m excited about what he’s doing at Nebraska right now, having a good season.”
In reply to the above post, John Blackwell posted a simple message with a heart that said, "AGTG." This acronym means "All Glory To God." A faith that these two friends share in common besides their basketball success at Wisconsin.
When Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard was asked about Essegian, he said that Nebraska is doing a good job of drawing up stuff for his former guard. He commented on how dangerous Essegian can be, "He's got a quick trigger" and "He will let them fly."
Essegian is shooting almost 42% from three this season and has made 49 of them this season. This is his highest mark at this point of the season in his career. He is a dangerous player, especially when he's got his catch and release going, and Wisconsin will be looking to contain him from beyond the arch. Blackwell and Essegian are ready for battle but it'll be an "old friends" war.
