As NFL training camps around the league begin, teams and fans will get their first true looks at the rookies on the roster. For the Indianapolis Colts, seventh-round selection and former Badger Hunter Wohler has already begun to show why he's one of the premier safeties in his class.
Early reports are that Wohler is establishing himself as one of the most physical and aggressive players on the Colts defense. According to the South Bend Tribune, Wohler has been involved in several pass-breakups, even laying some thumping body blows before pads are allowed. Wohler's hits were apparently even drawing gasps from the crowd of fans attending the practice.
Hunter Wohler carving out a role with the Colts as a rookie
For Wisconsin fans, Wohler's physical play is nothing new. While he lacks elite athleticism, Wohler has always been incredibly instinctual and physical. In the NFL, there was some initial debate as to whether Wohler would remain at safety, or move down to linebacker. For now though, it seems his home is as a big, hard-hitting safety who can play up along the line of scrimmage when needed.
So far it looks as though Wohler's play-style is translating well to the NFL level. Nothing is guaranteed as a seventh-round draft pick, but Wohler is making the case to play a significant amount for the Colts as a rookie. While he may not start, Wohler could very well end up being the guy brought in for nickel and dime packages throughout the season.
