When Wisconsin recruited Daniel Freitag out of high school, there were some high hopes for him. He was a 4-star talent with a flashy ability to score from the point guard position. However, in his first year, he couldn't break the rotation, and when he was in, he didn't look the part. He seemed lost or tentative as a Badger.

Freitag jumped in the portal at the end of the season and was picked up by Buffalo. He then found his 4-star pedigree, averaging 19.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. The former Badger had 10 games of 20+ points and three with 30+. He's shown he can be that 4-star recruit; now he's going to be looking into the high majors again.

It was a smart move by Freitag to transfer down to Buffalo for immediate playing time and the ability to play as much as he wanted. He ended up averaging 33 minutes per game, which gave him the confidence and allowed him to showcase his ability. There will be plenty of high-major offers now coming his way.

The big question that's been rattling Wisconsin fans' brains is, did Greg Gard waste Freitag? Did he miss out on him by having him on the bench? That's a good question; it's hard to answer fully without knowing all the behind-the-scenes. However, in the limited action that Freitag showed for Wisconsin, he wasn't what he showcased in Buffalo.

Freitag looked like he wasn't a 4-star for the Badgers, but looks like all of it for Buffalo. Sometimes, the change of scenery and the lowering of expectations so a player can play loose and free is all that's needed.

Either way, it's great for Freitag, and now he's going to get another shot at a high major in the transfer portal.
