Former Wisconsin assistant coach and Virginia head coach Tony Bennett will retire effective immediately according to Jeff Goodman.

Bennett is expected to announce his retirement decision tomorrow, just weeks before the season. It's unusual timing, but his reasonings will most likely be explained during his official announcement.

The Clintonville, Wisconsin native attended UW-Green Bay before playing professionally. He then got into coaching, where from 1999-2003, he coached the Badgers as an assistant under his father, Dick Bennett. Tony Bennett had been the head man at Virginia for the past 15 years, winning a National Title in 2019. His surprising retirement, and the timing of it, has sent shockwaves through the college basketball world, leading some Wisconsin fans to hope he ends up coaching again for the Badgers down the line.

Reasons for his abrupt retirement will most likely filter out soon enough, but as it stands now, he will be one of the most decorated Wisconsinite coaches of all time. He'll finish with 433 head coaching wins and two National Coach of the Year awards, not to mention Wisconsin's 2000 trip to Final Four, their first in over 50 years.
