Is it too early to start talking about building a statue for John Tonje in Madison once his playing days are over? Okay, we kid, but come on, watching Tonje make plays for Wisconsin Badgers basketball has been a ton of fun this season, as the transfer has been lighting things up.
Thanks to Tonje's brilliant play, which included him taking home National Player of the Week honors earlier this year, the Badgers are a perfect 8-0 to start the campaign. Over the weekend, Tonje scored 33 points in the Greenbrier Tip-Off title game against Pitt.
Talk about electric. As great as Tonje is on the court, he's turning heads off of it because of how humble he is. He's looking like one of the top players in the Big Ten, but at the end of the day, he remains grateful that Greg Gard and Wisconsin brought him in to prove he's a stud:
John Tonje is loving life for the Wisconsin Badgers early on
As you might have been able to guess, people are showering Tonje with love on social media over what he had to say about the university and Madison. It's a special place, we don't have to tell you about that, but it's so great to see Tonje already considering it home too.
Through his first eight games with the Badgers, Tonje is leading the way with his 23 points per night, while adding 5.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Did anyone expect him to be this great to begin his time with the program? He is surely exceeding expectations.
Not only that, but he's been a leader for this team and the kind of character people should look up to. Tonje is winning over countless people in Wisconsin and rightfully so. He's going to look to keep things rolling the rest of the way, including the Badgers' next matchup with Chicago State on Saturday. Then, a fun matchup with Michigan on Dec. 3 will be on the way.
